Braga, Exploring Portugal's Oldest City
Braga is the oldest city in Portugal, with a history that goes back to prehistoric times as evidenced by archaeological discoveries of an Indo-European Celtic people who inhabited the region long before the Romans. Walking around the city gave us the feeling of being in many different time periods with Neolithic, Roman, Medieval and Modernist buildings everywhere. We visited Braga on a daytrip from Porto and although we didn’t spend much time here, Braga was much more than expected and we recommend that anyone visiting Portugal make a daytrip to this interesting city.
Places of Interest
Our favorite part of Braga was visiting the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was quite an experience to climb the impressive zigzag stairways while witnessing scenes from the Passion of the Christ with each increasing level. And once we reached the top of the stairway, we walked around the perfectly manicured gardens next to the baroque church. This is a perfect way to spend an afternoon but you will need to arrange transportation beforehand since it is located on a hilltop on the outskirts of town. We hired a driver but you can also take a bus which drops you off at the bottom of the stairway. For more information on bus schedules and tickets visit: https://tub.pt/tarifario/
This national monument is one of the most important buildings in the country due to its long history (first cathedral of Portugal) and status as the seat of the Archdiocese of Braga. Upon entering, your attention is instantly drawn to the grand organ and opulent high choir. Most interesting is the chapel of kings (Capela dos Reis) where parents of the first king of Portugal are buried as well as the cathedral museum which houses many relics from its storied past.
This archway immediately catches your attention with its baroque and neoclassical details welcoming visitors to the historic city center.
Located in the downtown area, this beautiful building used to be the home of a wealthy 18th century merchant and it is a notable example of the finest baroque architecture.
This church is located on the outskirts of the city close to Bom Jesus do Monte and it is notable for its circular design. But the best part of visiting this church is enjoying the amazing view of the entire city below from the steps of the church.
This is another beautiful church with captivating baroque architecture. However, the best part for us was walking around the outdoor garden (Santa Barbara) and marveling at all of the interesting statues, topiaries and horticulture.
